Bruno Abrahao is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics at NYU Shanghai and a Global Network Associate Professor at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at NYU. His research spans platform and marketplace design, the foundations of deep learning and large language models, and generative AI for measurement in organizations and markets.
On platforms, he studies how people decide whom to trust among strangers, and how reputation systems, experience on the platform and the way options are presented shape those decisions. Much of this work draws on a large online experiment with nearly 9,000 Airbnb users. Its first results showed that a strong reputation offsets social bias in whom people trust. Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia presented them in his 2016 TED talk "How Airbnb designs for trust," viewed more than 3 million times, and they were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2017.
His work on the foundations of deep learning and large language models studies how these models represent information and how they behave on data unlike their training data. He also uses generative AI for measurement and prediction in different settings, from organizational culture, employee fit and retention to service quality across millions of establishments.
He has also published at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) and the ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD). Three of his papers have won awards or been best papers, at The Web Conference (WWW), the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM), and the ACM Web Science Conference. His course AI for Business earned him an Honorable Mention for the 2025-2026 NYU Shanghai Teaching Excellence Award.
Professor Abrahao holds a PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Departments of Computer Science and Sociology at Stanford University, and a Researcher at Microsoft Research AI in Redmond.
